Recently, I find that I am very easily irritable. The other day, my mum asked me something and I just blasted her off. After that, she told me that I am a lot less patient and that has been happening frequently. Is this something part of menopause and how can I manage this better?

Yes, irritability and mood swings can be menopause symptoms due to hormonal changes in your body. Not all women will have this symptom during menopause.

Understanding menopause and symptoms will allay your anxiety and know that these emotions are hormonal and not your fault. Secondly, modification of lifestyle may help you to keep positive mindset – by eating well balanced diet (avoid high caffeine or spicy food intake), exercising regularly with relaxation therapy such as meditation or yoga. Work life balance by creating some ‘me time’ is also important if you are juggling between roles and responsibilities. Have some sharing sessions with your friends or peers may aid in relieving the frustration feeling during menopause as well.

For those come with more obvious and severe symptoms which affect daily activities or quality of life, there is hormone replacement therapy available to help relief such symptoms of menopause. Consult a doctor if symptoms are affecting your lifestyle and daily living.
