Resolved Egg Freezing

Posted by User | 2021-05-30 | General health

I understand that egg freezing in Singapore is allowed if I am prone to cancer. How do I check if I am prone to cancer and I should consider freezing my eggs?

Fertility preservation in the form of freezing your eggs is allowed in Singapore for medical reasons which include cancer, or a high risk of breast and/ or ovarian cancer where doctors have recommended the removal of your ovaries.

If you have been diagnosed with cancer, you may wish to consider freezing your eggs before you undergo any cancer treatment, which could be surgery, chemotherapy or radiotherapy, or a combination of all three. It is certainly recommended to have any fertility preservation before chemotherapy or radiotherapy, as these could affect the condition and quality of the eggs.

If you have a family history of breast cancer, you may have been recommended to go for testing for a mutation known as BRCA. If you are a BRCA carrier, your doctor may advise preventive ovary removal, meaning removal before cancer is detected in them. Egg freezing can be considered before you have the surgery to remove your ovaries.

Going for health screening can help to detect cancer early, and you may wish to consider fertility preservation if a cancer is found.

I hope this information is useful.

Best wishes,

Dr Lim

Dear Dr Lim, your response is excellent and much appreciated. Thank you. :)

It is unsettling that one is unable to freeze her eggs in Singapore if there are no backing medical reasons and that going overseas is not easy now.
