Among mental health issues, depression is complex, and has a number of causes. Women, in fact, are nearly twice as likely as men to be diagnosed with depression, and the disease can afflict anyone, at any age. Issues related to Covid-19's isolation, or grief, or dealing with major upheavals such as job loss, have made depression a related outcome of the global pandemic. Those saying they are experiencing declining mental health exist across the population regardless of their work situation. In other words, even if an individual has the fortune of remaining healthy and financially stable during this period, she could still be vulnerable to stress, anxiety and interpersonal tension and conflict. In this series of Nectar Circle, we speak with Vanessa, a psychologist from Annabelle Psychology, to find out more about High-functioning Depression. Negative feelings and emotions are common to us all. It is not about having these emotions, but how we manage and cope with them. Practicing mindfulness does not mean you have to approve of these feelings. It simply means giving them the space to exist, and not struggling against them. Sometimes when we go through a difficult life event, we may struggle with these painful thoughts and feelings. In the following audio podcast, our psychologists will be demonstrating how mindfulness may look like in a therapy session with a client who presents both depressive and anxiety symptoms. Let’s do a mindfulness exercise: Observing and Describing. This exercise will help us explore the numerous feelings and thoughts that arise inside of us. We observe and describe our thoughts and feelings without judgment or criticism, and without trying to push them away.
We often ruminate about the past and worry about the future, forgetting to live in the present moment.
